California - a place that most of us have seen on our screen and dream about at night. Filled with incredibly diverse wildlife, beautiful beaches, buzzing cities and delicious food, there's no one way to enjoy a trip to this sunny state. Take a road trip to the pretty coastal city of Santa Barbara, where you can explore Spanish colonial influences, marvel at the 18th-century Mission Santa Barbara, still home to a group of Franciscan friars, and relax in one of its many laid back restaurants and bars.

Take the ferry from San Francisco to visit the spine-tingling site of Alcatraz. This former maximum-security prison has a history dating back to 1859 and once housed famous inmates such as Al Capone and James 'Whitey' Bulger.
