On the north-eastern side of Mount Nebo - a location where Moses was said to have been shown a view of Canaan, the Promised Land - lies the fascinating city of Amman. Situated atop many hills, the Jordanian capital overlooks wondrous Roman ruins, mosques, markets and cafes.

The beautiful Citadel cannot be missed, which grants you stunning, panoramic views of the city stretched out before you. Just a brief walk from the citadel lies the restored Roman Theater which comprises steep, curving stairs that can fit up to 6,000 people. The Jordan Archaeological Museum, which is home to artefacts dating from prehistoric times to the 15th century, is the best way to deep dive into the mysterious past of this nation.

During your visit, try the dish for which the city is famed, Mensef, which is succulent lamb cooked in fermented, dried yoghurt served over rice or bulgur, while enjoying the warm hospitality for which the Jordanian people are famous.
